Dyson's debut curtailed afterbirdie blitz is offset in eventful second round

SIMON DYSON'S US Masters debut drew to an early conclusion last night but only after a rollercoaster second round.

Following an opening round 77 which left him requiring a low score yesterday just to make the cut, Dyson flirted with qualification for the weekend with a gutsy display before fading over the back nine.

He signed for a 73 that saw him finish on six over par and outside the cut mark.

Teeing off among the first group out yesterday, the four-times winner on the European Tour began with a double bogey after three-putting the first green.

However, backed by a loyal following of family and friends from his hometown of Malton, the 32-year-old responded with a stunning run of four birdies in the next five holes which put him at three over par and within sight of a shot at qualifying for the weekend.

Dyson birdied the par-five second and then picked up further shots at the fourth, fifth and sixth, only to hand one back with a bogey at the seventh.

Another birdie at the par-four ninth saw him reach the turn in 34.

But with weekend involvement beckoning on his Augusta bow, Dyson could not turn his ambition into scores.

He dropped four shots on the inward nine before a run of three straight bogeys from the 14th ended his hopes.

The Alfred Dunhill Links champion, who finished eighth on the Order of Merit last year, at least birdied the par-five 13th at Amen Corner by knocking in a 20-foot putt after a solid recovery chip from just above Ray's Creek.

Dyson managed only six pars in an eventful second circuit at Augusta.

"Watching on television you think it can't be that hard, but it really is," said Dyson.

"If somebody had said I would play like I did I would have taken it, but the wind probably cost me 10 shots.

"There's some nasty pins and it's a bit severe, but you can't wrong-side yourself."

Harrogate's John Parry moved into contention at the Madeira Islands Open on the European Tour with a second-round 66.

Oliver Whiteley (Hillsborough) is four shots back after a 68.

James Morrison holds a one-shot lead at the halfway point.

He added a second round of 65 to his opening 67 for a 12-under-par total of 132.
