Edmund is now going wild at the double for Wimbledon

BEVERLEY teenager Kyle Edmund is one of two British players to be announced by the All England Club as wild-card entries for the men’s singles at Wimbledon, with James Ward also on the list.

Edmund, 18, claimed the boy’s doubles title at the French Open last week and impressed in his first-round defeat to 16th seed Grega Zemlja at the AEGON Championships at Queen’s on Tuesday.

Ward, who was a semi-finalist at Queen’s in 2011, took Ivan Dodig to three sets following his wild-card appearance and both players will be in the draw at Wimbledon.

Dan Evans, who has made the third round at Queen’s, will have to qualify for the tournament.

Australian Matthew Ebden, who won the mixed doubles at the Australian Open earlier this year, and Nicolas Mahut were also granted wild-card entries.

Six wild-cards for the ladies’ singles have also been announced with Germany’s Andrea Petkovic named alongside the British quintet of Elena Baltacha, Anne Keothavong, Johanna Konta, Tara Moore and Samantha Murray.

Edmund has also been granted a wild-card for the men’s doubles, alongside compatriot Jamie Baker whilst Ebden is named with the experienced Jamie Delgado.

British duo David Rice and Sean Thornley are also included with four of the five ladies’ doubles comprising all-British names.

Keothavong and Konta, Moore and Melanie South, Murray and Jade Windley and Nicola Slater and Lisa Whybourn are all handed wild-card entries, as well as Shahar Peer and Zi Yan.

The Lawn Tennis Association has extended its sponsorship deal with Aegon UK until 2017.

The new four-year agreement will see life and pensions firm Aegon continue as title sponsor of the grass-court events at Queen’s, Eastbourne and Birmingham, as well as sponsoring all Great Britain national teams from Davis Cup and Fed Cup down through the age groups.

Mick Desmond, the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) commercial director, revealed that technology giant IBM’s innovations for Wimbledon 2013 include an iPad app that serves accurate streams of match data, highlights and in-depth statistical information.

IBM is applying advanced analytics software to millions of public tweets generated throughout the tournament to assess which players are the social fans’ favorites.
