Ellar hat-trick as Sandal cut loose while Scull clinches Bees thriller

Full-back James Ellar included a second-half hat-trick in his personal tally of 34 points. Winger Simon Frewin scored the first of a brace in the first-half, which also included tries for second-row Austen Thompson and back row James Briscoe. Ellar’s running broke any remaining resistance and there were also tries for winger Sam Chitabura and prop Rob Norbury.

Huddersfield clung on for a 
35-33 win at ninth-placed Westoe.

The visitors stormed ahead through a try from second-row Gavin Rhodes, a conversion and Tom Hodson’s penalty but Westoe then led 12-10 with two tries and a conversion.

A penalty try got Huddersfield back in front and they went on to score three more before the interval through wingers Thomas Van Rooyen and Mike Clarke and centre Ben Mitchell, and the hosts added one more to stay in touch at 32-17 down. Westoe dominated down the slope in the second half with two converted tries, Huddersfield responding with a penalty.

Morley picked up a bonus-point in a 42-33 defeat at Waterloo.

Full-back Jack Moon scored the Maroons’ only try of the first half as they trailed 25-7. Fly-half Mark Chester and scrum-half Shaun Dadswell pulled back tries, only for Waterloo to stretch it to 42-33. Chester and winger Karl Bradshaw went over in the final quarter.

In a game where there was little at stake for either side, Beverley secured a 44-22 win over Burnage with some sparkling running rugby.

After 10 minutes, they led 17-0 through a penalty and two conversions by fly-half Phil Duboulay and tries by Tonci Buzov and Joe Pickets.

A try shortly before half-time by wing James Hodder got Burnage into the match but early in the second half Tomasi Tanumi went over for a third Beverley try.

Burnage briefly rallied with tries by Hodder and Andy Ashcroft but Beverley cruised home with further tries by Goran Jelencic, James Munro, and Tanumi, Duboulay adding two conversions and a penalty. Flanker Chris Quick scored a late converted consolation try for Burnage.

Bradford and Bingley grabbed a thrilling 45-43 win at Billingham. In the 12th minute off stoppage time, Dan Cookson bullocked his way to the line to pull the Bees level at 43 points each.

This left Richard Scull with an awkward conversion but the Bees full-back stepped up and nailed it to put them ahead but there were a further three minutes to play.

It led to impressive stand-off Peter Evans having the final opportunity but his kick from 30 metres was off target and the Bees took five points.
