Elliott leading the way in Ulster

SHEFFIELD professional road racer Malcolm Elliott, the former Tour of Spain points winner from Stannington, is leading the Tour of Ulster Road Race after finishing on the podium on both the opening two stages of the race near Dungannon.

Elliott, 48, who continues to ride like a man half his age, missed out in a three-up sprint for the line at the end of stage one, with Cycling Ulster-SLane Cycles' rival Philip Lavery pipping him by inches, while Lavery's team-mate Stephen Gallagher took third.

Elliott continued his good form with third spot in the second stage on Sunday with his Motorpoint-Marshalls Pasta team enjoying a good first stage with team-mate Lee Davis taking fourth, 11 seconds further back. Davis is leading the King of the Mountains category.

In time trialling, Hull-based Joel Wainman proved fastest in the Yorkshire Cycling Federation's 25-mile time trial near Boroughbridge on Saturday, covering the distance in an impressive 52min 17sec to win by 34 seconds from his nearest rival in a field of almost 100 riders.

Riding for Team Swift, Wainman's time gave him victory over Yorkshire Road Club's 44-year-old veteran Carl Saint, the Slaithwaite rider clocking 52.51, while the final spot on the podium went to City RC (Hull) rider Jason Young who was 26 seconds off the pace.

Elsewhere in the field, Yorkshire Road Club's 65-year-old Mike Shacklock was best of the over-50s with 57.51, while top woman was Holme Valley Wheelers' Rachael Mellor with 1.01.51 to take 48th spot overall.

The Rutland CC rider clocked 22.29 to take second spot in the event from Rowsley to Bakewell, while top spot belonged to Leicester rider Julian Ramsbottom of I Ride Racing Team.

Caisse D'Epargne's Alejandro Valverde won the final stage of the Tour de Romandie to claim the overall race win by just over 11 seconds.

The Spaniard comfortably overhauled Team Columbia rider Michael Rogers's overall lead after the Australian finished over 30 seconds back in yesterday's 121.8km stretch starting and finishing in Sion.

It left Rogers down in fourth in the final standings as Valverde was followed home by Slovenian Simon Spilak, with Russia's Denis Menchov third of Rabobank.
