England 38 Scotland 18: Twickenham victory for Lancaster

England began their quest for a Six Nations grand slam with a commanding victory over old enemy Scotland in the Calcutta Cup match at Twickenham, writes Nick Westby.

Having established a 19-11 lead at half-time thanks to a Chris Ashton try and 14 points from Owen Farrell, England accelerated out of the blocks in the second half with two tries in the opening 13 minutes to put the result beyond doubt.

Debutant Billy Twelvetreses and Geoff Parling scored the tries, but England did not twist the knife, and Scotland struck back through Stuart Hogg.

But there was a sense that his score was too little too late and so it proved, with Leeds-born replacement scrum-half Danny Care crossing at the death to seal the win.

Scotland had shown enterprise in the opening half and scored a good try through their debutant Sean Maitland.

England now head to Dublin to face Ireland who also won on the opening weekend, beating Wales 30-22 in Cardiff.
