Ennis chalked in for three county events

athletics: Jessica Ennis has entered three events at the Yorkshire Championships which take place at Cudworth today and tomorrow.

On the track she is listed for the 200m and in the field goes for the shot and javelin, which are relatively weak events for Ennis although she continues to improve steadily at both.

She set a new personal best for the shot of 14.79m in the recent World Indoor Championships while her season’s opener in the javelin three weeks ago was 45.66m, comparing favourably with her best of 46.71.

The 200m is one of her strongest events with a best of 23.11secs, a time beaten by only two British athletes last year. At Cudworth she clashes with ex-Rotherham athlete Louise Bloor (Trafford), a former county champion.

Whether Ennis competes in all three events remains to be seen because there is a clash in the timetable between the 200m and javelin.

Bloor also contests the 100m where she starts favourite.

Former Leeds athlete Richard Strachan (Trafford), who has high hopes of selection for the Olympic 400m, has entered this and the 100m and 200m as well.

Hannah Evenden (Edinburgh), triple medallist for Leeds Metropolitan Carnegie in the British Students’ Championships, competes in the discus and hammer.

The meeting starts at 10am on both days with all of Ennis’s events tomorrow.
