Ennis-Hill puts retirement thoughts on hold as Rio gold takes precedence

SHEFFIELD’S golden girl Jessica Ennis-Hill admits she is contemplating retirement – but is unlikely to make a decision until after the Rio Olympics.

Olympic champion Ennis-Hill has enjoyed a remarkable return to action following motherhood with the 29-year-old winning heptathlon gold in August’s World Championships in Beijing.

The Yorkshire star is now second favourite behind Andy Murray to win tomorrow’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year award – 
after which all roads lead to defending her Olympic title in next summer’s Games in South America.

Ennis-Hill has already confirmed that Rio will be her last Olympics – but no official decision on retirement is expected until after her bid for glory next summer. Ennis-Hill told The Yorkshire Post: “I am thinking about when I retire but have not made any firm decisions. I think that will happen post Rio. I do always have one eye on the future and think I will want to remain involved in sport in some capacity, but not as a pundit.

“My plans are not yet in place for 2016 – but I will do a few indoor competitions and then focus on the outdoors.”

Ennis-Hill, Kevin Sinfield and Lizzie Armitstead all fly the flag for Yorkshire in tomorrow’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year show.
