Ennis places seventh in strong Diamond field

SHEFFIELD’S Jessica Ennis continued her preparations for the World Championships in Daegu later this summer with a solid showing in the 100m hurdles at the Diamond League meeting in New York.

The world and European heptathlon champion finished seventh in a very strong field that included the likes of Lolo Jones and Kellie Wells, posting a time of 13.27 seconds in wet and miserable conditions.

Fellow Briton Tiffany Ofili Porter, who changed allegiance from the United States in September, came through to beat Jones to third spot, with 31-year-old Danielle Carruthers laying down a marker to her rivals by pipping Wells to win in 13.04 seconds.

Triple jumper Phillips Idowu, who like Ennis received an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, celebrated in style by claiming victory ahead of Christian Olsson with a leap of 16.67m as his main rival Teddy Tamgho struggled and ended up seventh.

In the 100m, Tyson Gay was pipped to the win by Jamaica’s Steve Mullings after the American dipped too early for the line.

Gay, unbeaten over 100m last season, made a poor start and saw training partner Mullings streak away from him.

He managed to reel Mullings in but his error with the line in sight allowed his rival to get the nod in a photo finish (10.26).

Allyson Felix’s speed down the home straight saw her take the spoils in the women’s 200m.

European champion Dai Greene produced a strong display as he claimed a third-place finish in the 400m hurdles.

The Welshman made up ground in the home straight but finished adrift of surprise winner Javier Coulson and Bershawn Jackson.
