FA Cup draw: Yorkshire clubs face challenge of Premier opposition

THE romance of the FA Cup is alive and well in Yorkshire after the third-round draw paired six of the region's clubs against Premier League opposition.

Five of the county's Championship clubs have the chance to prove the gulf between the top two divisions is not so vast with Leeds United earning the pick of the ties at Arsenal.

Barnsley are also in the capital to face top-flight strugglers West Ham, while the rest have home draws with Sheffield United hosting Aston Villa, Doncaster Rovers entertaining Wolves and Hull City paired with Wigan Athletic.

But the most romantic of all the ties to come out of the hat was a real David vs Goliath clash as high-flying Bolton Wanderers were drawn at home to Blue Square Bet Premier side York City.

"We're delighted, it's absolutely fantastic," said York manager Gary Mills, who was joined by his players and staff to watch the draw unfold at their Bootham Crescent clubhouse.

"It's a very special day for us, being in the hat with all the big sides.

"There was a lot of excitement around. We were all after a Manchester United, a Liverpool or a Chelsea, but to get Bolton is just as fantastic.

"They're one of the form teams in the Premier League right now.

"We have worked hard to get into the third round and to be rewarded with a tie at a Premier League club is very welcome."

York's achievement in reaching the third round last year was similarly rewarded with an away trip to Stoke City, a club Mills likens to their opponents on the second weekend in January.

The former Nottingham Forest defender was not in charge of the club back then, but in the relatively short space of time he has occupied the manager's dugout at Kit-Kat Crescent he has discovered the fans' passion for following their team.

He said: "Bolton is not a million miles away from us so hopefully our fans can follow us there and make it a great atmosphere.

"We've gone away from home in every round so far; Kidderminster, Rotherham and Darlington, and done a job. It'll be very nice if we can do that again."

Leeds's trip to Arsenal will reignite memories of their one and only FA Cup triumph to date, a 1-0 win over the Gunners in the 1972 final.

"It's a fantastic draw," said manager Simon Grayson, whose side last year went to Old Trafford and defeated Manchester United at the same stage of the competition.

"Arsenal are one of the best teams in the country and one of the top footballing teams in Europe.

"In an 18-month period we've played Man U, Liverpool, Tottenham and now Arsenal in the cups which is fantastic for the club and the fans."

Barnsley manager Mark Robins said of his club's trip to West Ham: "It's a game our players will be relishing."
