Faulkner and Turner add steel to relay

The two 21-year-olds – Turner from Rotherham and Faulkner from Sheffield – partnered Siobhan-Marie O’Connor and Amelia Maughan in the 4x200m freestyle relay at the Tolcross Swimming Centre.

It was Turner’s second relay medal of the Commonwealth Games following her silver on the opening night in the 4x100m, while the medal is the first major achievement for Faulkner, who was a doubt ahead of the Games with an injury.

Faulkner swam the third leg while Turner anchored the team home, behind winners Australia and runners-up Canada.

Turner, meanwhile, has revealed she is a stickler for formality.

The South Yorkshire swimmer was miffed to find she was listed as ‘Becki’ in official Games documents and was smarting about the issue.

“I prefer my actual name,” said Turner, who juggles a swimming career with studies at Sheffield Hallam University.

“I am a bit annoyed they have put my nickname on. I put my nickname down but I didn’t realise it was going to be on everything.”

Fran Halsall raced to victory in the 50m freestyle in a Games record of 23.96, the fastest time in the world this year, to edge out Australia’s Cate Campbell by 0.04.

Halsall missed out on medal success at London 2012, but has no shortage of Commonwealth ones.

The Southport swimmer, who won silver in the event in Delhi, said she always believed such a time was in her, even though the nerves were jangling. “That was the target all year. I knew I was ready to swim it which made me more nervous,” she said.
