Paul Thompson’s team took a first period lead through Guillaume Desbiens at 7.06 before doubling their advantage at 25.32 thanks to Mathieu Roy.

But the hosts came roaring back to level by the end of the second period, first halving the deficit through Michael Door at 29.25.

Within two minutes the score was 2-2 when Stephen Gunn struck at 31.18.

Finely poised going into the third, the game-winning goal came from Jeff Legue at 45.01, with Levi Nelson adding a fourth under a minute later to provide Steelers – who have never won the competition during the Elite League era – with a healthy advantage going into the second leg next Wednesday at Ice Sheffield.
