Absence of Vaughan still concern for Town as Edgar lands

Birmingham City's David Edgar, centre, has joined Huddersfield on loan.

The Canadian international, 27, has joined on loan for the rest of the season, with Town hoping to follow up his capture with another addition to boost their forward ranks.

With James Vaughan sidelined for an indefinite spell with a fractured cheekbone and eye socket sustained in Saturday’s loss at Middlesbrough, Town are now working to bring in at least one new striker.

A swap deal involving out-of-favour Cardiff City forward Nicky Maynard heading to Town and Lee Peltier moving the other way, remains one distinct possibility.

Maynard’s Bluebirds colleague Adam Le Fondre has also been linked with Huddersfield.

As it stands, Chris Powell effectively has one recognised centre forward available for the Roses trip to Wigan in the shape of Nahki Wells – unless anything changes.

Bluebirds manager Russell Slade confirmed his interest in Peltier following his side’s 2-1 Championship defeat to Boro at the Riverside Stadium on Tuesday evening, with the Liverpudlian having previously worked with him at Yeovil.

Slade said: “Lee Peltier is on our radar and we’ll have to wait and see. There is a possibility.”

Maynard is out of contract at Cardiff at the end of the season, having been linked with Millwall at the start of the current transfer window.

The 28-year-old, who has not featured for the Welsh outfit since November 8, was lined up to be part of the deal which saw Scott Malone head to Cardiff at the start of January, with the former Crewe and West Ham forward heading the other way to the New Den.

But despite Malone moving to Wales, Maynard remains at the club, although Cardiff are prepared to let him leave on loan and even pay part of his wages.

Having not featured so far under Slade, Maynard’s days at the Bluebirds look numbered.

Meanwhile, Powell feels the versatility of 6ft 4in Edgar will add to his defensive options.

He said: “He’s a very capable player in a number of positions, having played during his career at centre-back, right-back, left-back and in a holding midfield role in the top two divisions in England.

“David also has a well-earned reputation as a leader and organiser on the pitch, which will be of great benefit to the team.”
