Adkins coy over Baxter as striker is disciplined

The 23-year-old was punished by the Blades following an off-the-field incident last weekend.

United, and Adkins, have refused to go into details of the incident or punishment.

But it happened after Baxter missed the 1-1 derby draw on Saturday against Barnsley with a leg injury. Asked if the midfielder will return to first-team action tomorrow, Adkins told The Yorkshire Post: “I have dealt with the situation, and when the team is selected on Saturday, Oldham will be the first to know who are they playing against.

“I will pick the team I want to win the weekend’s game. We have dealt with it internally. Discipline is high on my agenda, you are well aware of that.

“We deal with it in-house, as a football club, and we move on.

“Jose was injured for Saturday’s game, he got injured against Shrewsbury at half-time. He got a nasty blow to the leg.

“Jose has been doing well for us this season. A young lad, and like all players, learning their way in the world. People sometimes do things which they will regret later on in life, or regret at the time, and they need to know the consequences of that.

“We have to make sure we are here to help them understand what discipline is all about.

“Jose didn’t play at the weekend because he was injured, something’s gone on where he stepped out of line, and as a football club we have done what we needed to from a discipline point of view.”
