Barnsley 0 Southampton 1: Hill stunned by Tykes performance

Barnsley lost to 10-man Southampton today in the Championship as league football returned to Oakwell.

Striker Andy Gray was available after missing the first two games of the season with a hip injury, but failed to make the match-day 16.

Tykes manager Keith Hill recalled Scott Wiseman, Nathan Doyle and David Perkins who were rested for the midweek Carling Cup defeat by Morecambe.

Barnsley trailed after 30 minutes when David Connolly headed home from close range, and despite Richard Chaplow being sent off late on for the visitors, the hosts could not find an equaliser.

Barnsley boss Hill, who is yet to see his side score in any of their first three games, said: “On another day we could have been 3-0 down in the first half-hour, on another day we might have equalised in the last five minutes, but there’s no pressure in the last five minutes. It’s typical of a losing team.

“In the last five minutes players give everything, but it means nothing, it should have been produced in the first five minutes.

“I won’t do this job if I can’t be positive. We should expect to compete with Southampton but we didn’t do that, we conceded too much ground to them.”

He added: “It wasn’t very good, it was not a reflection of Keith Hill and it was not a reflection of what I’ve witnessed in the last few weeks. We didn’t turn up and I am bitterly disappointed. For the first time in five years I felt alone on the touchline.”
