Winger Jennings settled the contest early in the second half with a powerful low drive from the edge of the box to lift Barnsley to 23rd - two points from safety - and stretch Forest’s winless run to five games in all competitions.

With rivals Millwall, Doncaster and Yeovil all winning, victory was vital for the Reds to keep in touch with safety.

Barnsley boss Danny Wilson dedicated the victory to the fans after last week’s 5-0 thrashing at Huddersfield.

“It was not only the win that was important to us today, I think the performance and giving something back to the fans today was a major, major priority for us,” he said.

“We didn’t see the true us last week, over the last few months we’ve showed better resilience than we did last week but I think we went a long way to putting it right today.

“We responded very, very well and I have to say the fans were as good as we were today; absolutely top class, getting behind us.

“I think the last 20 minutes was a little bit nervy but the fans didn’t show the nerves, they just got behind us and drove us through it, so it was a great team effort from both the fans and the players today.

“At the end, when they’re throwing everything at us, we had to defend resolutely and I think everybody did, not just the back four.

“But I will say again and I want to emphasise it; the fans were absolutely brilliant and that was a great atmosphere at the end.”
