Barnsley 2 Peterborough United 2: Hume strike sends Posh spiralling

PETERBOROUGH'S relegation from the Coca-Cola Championship was confirmed in Jim Gannon's last game in charge, after Barnsley grabbed a late equaliser at Oakwell.

The result confirmed Posh's relegation back to League One after just a season in the second tier, ending a tumultuous campaign for the London Road club, although Posh supporters will have been buoyed by the news that former Bristol City manager Gary Johnson will be appointed as new manager later today, ending Gannon's three-month tenure at the helm.

After losing five games on the trot, the match had started in the

perfect manner for the bottom-placed side with returning centre-back Ryan Bennett opening the scoring with a well-taken shot into the bottom-right corner in the fifth minute.

However, Barnsley hit back immediately through Iain Hume and continued to pepper the visitors' goal for the remainder of the first half.

After the restart, it was the visitors who snatched the lead through Tommy Rowe's low drive. But, like in the first half, the Tykes responded strongly and five minutes from time Hume jinked past goalkeeper James McKeown and placed the ball into an empty net to condemn Posh to the drop.

Afterwards, Barnsley manager Mark Robins admitted the draw was a good in the circumstances, if not frustrating.

"We huffed and puffed, we created one or two chances and it was a great performance from (Luke) Steele at one end, and a good goal-scoring performance from Hume at the other," said Robins.

"We've got balls into the box, we created chances, but still the overriding emotion of that is one of relief – which isn't a great one – and knowing that we looked leggy."

Gannon believes his successor could realistically lead Posh back to the Championship at the first attempt.

"I think the club's got a good structure about it," said Gannon. "There's good finance at the club, good support from the upper management. They've had the experience of being successful in (League One) and I'm sure under Gary's guidance they will be in a great condition come the start of the season."
