BARNSLEY manager Danny described the outcome at Oakwell as “very satisfying” after fielding one of the youngest sides he has selected in his managerial career.

His line-up certainly had too much energy for rock-bottom Yeovil Town, who had to play for over an hour with 10 men.

Glovers defender Ben Nugent was shown the red card for raising his elbow during a tangle with debutant George Waring, the 6ft 5ins striker, on loan from Stoke.

Waring, one of three debutants in the Tykes’ starting line-up, tapped in after a mistake from visiting goalkeeper Jed Steer.

Conor Hourihane doubled the Reds’ advantage with a quarter of an hour left. A sweeping move down the right ended with the midfielder being grounded as he tried to round Steer. Hourihane duly stepped up to slot home the resultant spot-kick.

The result was beyond doubt at that stage and the Reds can look forward to next weekend’s derby trip to Doncaster Rovers with confidence.

“I think it was a gritty performance but it was never going to be easy,” said Wilson.

“We defended well against the wind in the first half and then we managed the game very well after the break.

“The red card is indefensible and it’s right in front of the ref.

“I don’t think anyone can complain about it, but I thought their goalkeeper might have got a touch on the ball for the penalty.

“It’s one of the youngest sides I have ever put out so overall it was very satisfying to get the result and it will be a great boost of confidence for them.”

Yeovil Town manager Gary Johnson commented: “We’re disappointed, of course we are.

“We believe it was a sending-off. Whether it was retaliation for whatever, we’re taking that as read.

“But the penalty has definitely gone against us and wasn’t right. Jed Steer is an honest lad and certainly for the penalty he was really upset, because he did get to the ball first.”
