Barnsley caretaker Heckingbottom content with his lot

BARNSLEY caretaker head coach Paul Heckingbottom says he is comfortable with his own situation - after revealing that there have been no updates regarding his own future after stepping into breach for Lee Johnson.

Heckingbottom, assisted by Tommy Wright, has assumed caretaker charge of the Reds since Johnson’s departure to Bristol City and leads out Barnsley for the first time at Oakwell in Saturday’s derby with Doncaster Rovers.

Heckingbottom, who hails from Royston and is a boyhood Reds fan, has made no secret of his desire to earn the job on a full-time basis, but is solely concentrating on the here and now.

He said: “There’s nothing official. I know the club have made statements and said they are happy with the short-term and how things are going.

“That’s all we know and there’s nothing more to say on that until the club are willing to make a decision and make it official.

“So we are just carrying on. In terms of how the job has felt, things have settled down and the players are settling down after the mad few days.”

Meanwhile, Heckingbottom has confirmed that injury-hit winger Ryan Williams will be in the first-team frame in the near future.

He said: “It is not going to be in the short-term and it is frustrating for the player and the football club.

“The first thing for Ryan is getting him on the training ground and training regularly.

“We have to manage Ryan back to training.”
