Barnsley face Crewe Alexandra and Newcastle United in pre-season after St George's Park camp

Barnsley are to play pre-season friendlies against Crewe Alexandra and Newcastle United after a training camp at St George's Park, it has been confirmed.

The Reds, who dramatically escaped Championship relegation in added time of the final match of the season, will restart pre-season training on Friday following a round of covid-19 tests.

They will head to England's national football centre on Monday.

No time and date has been confirmed for their opening pre-season game, against the Railwaymen, but they will play the Magpies behind closed doors at 3pm on August 29, at the Premier League side's Darsley Park training ground.

In light of the current health crisis, the club have asked supporters to stay away from training sessions and friendlies.

The Championship season is due to restart on September 12, although there could be a round of League Cup fixtures before that.

The first round is expected to be scheduled for September 5, but as that falls during an international window, it has been suggested some sides could start the competition in late August.
