The midfielder arrives at Oakwell for an undisclosed fee, having come through the ranks at Anfield.

The Reds - who are all being tipped to complete a loan move to sign Leicester's Matty James according to reports - have beaten off rival interest to sign the 21-year-old, who was under-18s captain at Liverpool when Anfield legend Steven Gerrard was coaching the Merseyside giants' academy team.

The Bristol-born player has spent previous spells in Yorkshire on loan at Doncaster Rovers and Hull City.

On Kane, who created a positive impression on Barnsley followers with an outstanding goalscoring performance when playing for Doncaster at Oakwell in November 2018 - in a 2018-19 season when he made the League One Team of the Year, chief executive officer Dane Murphy said: “Herbie is a fantastic player and we are delighted to have him here at Oakwell.

"He has had an excellent education with Liverpool, working under one of the finest managers in world football, and has shown that he has the quality to compete at this level.

“Naturally, there were a number of clubs interested in signing Herbie, but we are thrilled that he chose to come to Barnsley.

"It’s an indication of our devotion to give young, talented individuals an opportunity to showcase their ability and the Club believe he will be a great success.”

On joining the club, Kane added: “I am feeling good, excited and I’m looking forward to getting going. I want to score goals and hopefully I can do that here, look back and reflect on it at the end of the season.

“It’s a part of my game, trying to score goals from midfield as well as getting assists and helping the team – as much as I can do that, the better.”

Kane's arrival could be followed by the addition of James, who spent a loan spell at Oakwell in the second half of the 2016-17 season.

Meanwhile, reports in Wales say that Cardiff City have pulled out of the race to sign Reds forward Cauley Woodrow.
