Barnsley FC captain Alex Mowatt on his future

BARNSLEY captain Alex Mowatt is not ruling out extending his time at the Oakwell club and says he would be happy to remain here for the peak years of his career if contract talks reach a successful conclusion.

The former Leeds United player's current deal expires next summer and talks so far have failed to achieve a breakthrough.

Speaking recently, Reds CEO Dane Murphy said that the club were still speaking to Mowatt and his representatives and stressed that the 25-year-old was a 'core piece' in the Barnsley squad, while declaring their intent to reach a positive outcome.

On his future, Mowatt, speaking in an interview in the club's matchday programme ahead of Saturday's home game with Nottingham Forest, said: "I would like it to happen.

"I'm captain of the club, play week in, week out. I really enjoy my football at Barnsley. I have a good rapport with the fans and I live just twenty minutes down the road.

"So of course, I'd be happy to be here next season.

"The club is pretty unique in how it operates and I can't knock it really because it is how I came here. They know they're likely to lose their better players quite early, so they keep that philosophy of bringing younger players in beneath you.

"I'm open to sticking around and if we can get that sorted, then I'll be happy to.

"You never know in this game, anything can happen."
