“I have known Gerhard since 10 years ago – we worked together in the academy of Red Bull Salzburg and we always had contact during the last years.”

On joining the club, Eckert, who arrives from the Bayern Munich youth set-up, added: “We (Struber and I) worked together at Salzburg, when he was under 16s coach – I was working with the under 18s – so we had one year together in Austria and kept in touch for the last three years. It is a pleasure to be working with him.”

Middlesbrough have appointed former Huddersfield Town, Leeds United and Sheffield United goalkeeper Ian Bennett as their new goalkeeping coach.

The 48-year-old joins from Nottingham Forest, with Danny Coyne having left his role at Boro.
