When you’re a fan of a football club, sometimes even seeing the name of the opposition your side faces can fill you with dread.
On the other hand, fixtures against other teams will make you excited, with the assumption that a win is in sight.
It does not matter how your team is doing in any given season, there are just games that seem to end up in a certain result over and over again.
For Leeds United fans, facing Everton or West Ham United has brought the most joy in the league over the years. They’ve beaten the Toffees and the Hammers 47 times a piece.
However, a record of 51 losses against Liverpool makes them the Elland Road club’s most difficult opposition.
Hull City’s record against Barnsley means they are both the most frequently won and lost against side for the Humberside club. They have won against them 38 times but lost on 39 occasions.
The Tykes’s own favourite opposition are Port Vale, who they have beaten 43 times. Barnsley tend to struggle against Leicester City. The Foxes have vanquished them 49 times.
Blackburn Rovers and West Bromwich Albion have been kind opponents for Sheffield Wednesday, allowing the Owls to put together 50 wins. On the other hand, Wednesday’s 63 losses against Aston Villa makes them their least favourite side to face.
Interesting, city rivals Sheffield United have also lost to Villa a record number of times - 58. The Blades have done well when facing Blackburn Rovers, with 53 wins.
Huddersfield Town’s 35 wins against Birmingham City puts the Midlands side at the top of the charts for the Terriers’ favourite rivals, while Town have struggled against Portsmouth, with 46 losses.
Middlesbrough will be happy to know that promotion rivals Derby County are the team they tend to beat most often, winning 56 clashes. The north Yorkshire side have lost 59 times against Aston Villa.
Chesterfield tend to be Rotherham United’s vanquishers, beating them 34 times. Both Bradford City and Rochdale struggle when playing them, with Rotherham winning 33 matches against both teams.
Doncaster Rovers can also consider Rochdale to be their favourite side to play, having 49 wins to their name. However, Rochdale, along with Gillingham, have managed 32 wins against them over their league history, suggesting it’s never guaranteed Rovers will beat their Lancashire rivals.
York City are another side who could have both a positive and negative outlook on Rochdale, having lost to them 40 times but beaten them in 44 games.
Port Vale have fallen to losses against Bradford City in 40 games, making them the Bantams’ most frequently beaten side. Oldham Athletic, on the other hand, hold 38 wins against Bradford.
