Barnsley players dedicate Carabao Cup win to owner Patrick Cryne

AFTER Barnsley's dramatic Carabao Cup victory over Derby County on Tuesday evening booked a Wembley date with Tottenham next week, thoughts inevitably turned to one man.

Patrick Cryne’s deep sense of honour and duty of care for his club and its followers was chronicled in an emotional message to Reds fans ahead of the game –with the Oakwell owner conveying his thoughts in an update on his condition after being diagnosed with terminal cancer earlier this year.

A private and quietly-spoken man, Cryne penned a heartfelt letter to supporters in the club’s match-day programme which felt very much like a goodbye.

Cryne’s poignant thoughts have touched supporters of many clubs and not just those of a Barnsley persuasion, who were thanked for their ‘kindness down the years’.

Cryne wrote: “I am living on borrowed time. I live in pain, but living is better than the alternative.

Cancer is insidious, cruel and rapacious and I implore everyone to have regular checks to stop it gaining hold.

“Most people realise I was a reluctant custodian (of Barnsley FC) but what has made it bearable against the occasional cruelty of the internet world is the kindness shown to me by so many fans on a personal basis.

People are not shy in coming forward and telling me they appreciate my efforts, even if I have fallen short of their aspirations.

“I receive many letters and cards from fans who share with me their memories and best wishes. I am grateful to them all.

“Regarding this season, I think we will get stronger as it goes on and our team gels, not unlike the double Wembley season. I do not expect to live to see the ultimate outcome, but I travel in hope.”

The pre-match thoughts of Cryne also touched a chord with the Barnsley players who lined up on Tuesday with match-winner Adam Hammill dedicating the win to the club owner on a night when Barnsley booked their third Wembley date in the space of 17 months.

Hammill said: “I read it before the game and it touched home.

“We will dedicate that performance to him and will hopefully get another win at Wembley.

“He has been inspirational for the football club and I hold the man in high regard.”
