Barnsley release Jordan Green early by mutual consent

Barnsley have released Jordan Green six months before the end of his contract at the start of a month where they hope to make a couple of key additions.

The winger signed a two-and-a-half-year contract after joining from Yeovil Town in January 2019, but only made 12 appearances for the Reds, scoring his only goal against Southend United two months later.

He joined Newport County on loan this time last year, then Southend in the summer. But the Shrimpers sent him back to Oakwell after picking up an ankle ligament injury in September which was expected to rule him out for six weeks. He had only made three appearances for the League Two side.

There have been more opportunities for wingers since coach Valerien Ismael arrived in November and changed the formation to 3-4-3, but he is happy with the options he has outside of the centre-forward, rotating Conor Chaplin, Dominik Frieser, Luke Thomas and Victor Adeboyejo.

Both parties have therefore decided it would be best to cancel 25-year-old Green's contract.

Ismael is looking for an alternative to Cauley Woodrow in the centre of his forward line, with Norwich City's Carlton Morris the most likely option to provide competition and the possibility of resting the top-scorer.

The Reds are also keen to sign a centre-back.

Like most clubs, they are looking to act early, but Ismael sounds confident of doing so.
