The former Colchester midfielder was subject of close-season interest from several sides after firing 14 goals for the U’s last term - but the Reds won the race for his services and he linked up with his new team-mates for pre-season training today.

On signing Moncur, 22, who will be joined at Oakwell by striker Elliott Lee, who he played with at Colchester last term, head coach Paul Heckingbottom said: “We have been tracking George’s progress for some time so I’m absolutely delighted to get this transfer over the line.

“He’s a huge talent and was a stand-out player for Colchester, so it’s a big signing and a fantastic addition to the squad.

“Having met George in person and spoken with him in depth, it’s clear that he fits the bill in terms of the type of player that we want representing Barnsley Football Club. In addition to his footballing abilities, he’s down to earth, ambitious, hard-working and has the drive and energy to build a successful career in the game.

“George looks ready for the challenge of the Championship.”

Moncur is the son of ex-West Ham and Swindon midfielder John.

Barnsley remain in the market for Walsall striker Tom Bradshaw and several other targets.
