The 26-year-old scored ten times in 42 appearances for Barnsley as the Reds finished 14th on their return to the Championship last season.

However, like several other Reds, Watkins was in the final year of his contract and declined a contract offer from Paul Heckingbottom at the end of the season.

The striker is the latest high profile exit from Barnsley following Sam Winnall's move to Sheffield Wednesday and Conor Hourihane and James Bree's double move to Aston Villa in January.

Watkins, who received his first call-up to the Welsh national squad last season, said: "Norwich is a club with ambitions to be in the Premier League so I’m really happy to have made this decision.

"Everything is in place at Norwich to be successful. I’m really excited to be joining a project at a team whose ambitions match my own."

Watkins joined Barnsley from Scottish side Inverness Caledonian Thistle in 2015 and played a total of 67 games under Paul Heckingbottom.

He had previously played in Non League football at Bath City and Hereford United.
