Barnsley v Gillingham: Wilson backs Winnall to strike the goal trail

The former Scunthorpe United forward, who topped the League Two scoring charts with 23 last term to fire The Iron to promotion, and who has signed a three-year deal at Oakwell, is awaiting his first goal after his six-figure summer move.

Wilson is not unduly alarmed, with the Midlander’s performances having pleased him, but, equally, he accepts that a striker’s currency is goals.

The Barnsley chief said: “We could do with Sam getting on the scoresheet as that would give his all-round game a boost and we’re hoping that will come sooner rather than later.

“He’s been unlucky and you can see what he wants to do – score goals. He thrives on doing that.

“I know the team will always come first, but when you are a striker and know that is why people have brought you to the club, it’s always that bit of icing on the cake you need at the end of it.

“But he’s positive because the team are doing well and he is playing well. He’s no worries in that respect.”

After losing their first two games of the season, the Reds chiselled out a win at Crewe and a point at Coventry City in midweek, coming from behind on each occasion and Wilson believes that bodes well for the future.

He added: “We have a terrific group of lads, but results give you that little bit extra.

“To come back from behind in the last two games is obviously showing a little bit of steel and character in the team and that is always good for confidence.”
