Wilson’s side welcome Oldham this evening, with top-scorer Winnall’s late appearance from the substitutes’ bench providing added gloss to the much-needed weekend win over Port Vale.

Wilson will assess the fitness of nine-goal Winnall, who had been out since the end of November with a hamstring injury, today after he came on to replace Kane Hemmings seven minutes from time.

Wilson said: “Sam is our top scorer and that’s the main thing and when he is on the pitch he is a threat and the opposition know that as well.

“Psychologically, that puts us in a good place.

“We have missed his link play and certainly his goals, so we are delighted he is back.”

The Reds are eyeing back-to-back league wins for the first time since mid-November and victory would see them move within four points of sixth-placed Sheffield United, something not lost on Wilson.

He added: “You only have to look at the league again now and if we can get another good result, where it can put us .”
