Barnsley v Rochdale: Shackell grateful to break free at Tykes

BARNSLEY's new captain Jason Shackell has thanked Wolves manager Mick McCarthy for improving his game during a two-year stay at Molineux.

McCarthy, who made over 300 appearances in defence for Barnsley in the late Seventies and Eighties, allowed Shackell to move to Oakwell for a knockdown fee this summer.

The former Norwich City defender originally cost Wolves 500,000, but never got a taste of Premier League football and spent the majority of last season on loan at Doncaster Rovers.

Shackell, who makes his home debut for Barnsley in tonight's Carling Cup first-round tie against Rochdale, said: "I never really got settled at Wolves – but I don't think it was a wasted time for me as Mick McCarthy helped me in training and taught me one or two things about defending.

"He let me go on loan to Doncaster last season and I did have a great time there but once I spoke to Barnsley this summer I knew where I wanted to play."

Barnsley's 4-0 loss at Queens Park Rangers was the biggest in the Football League last weekend while Rochdale, celebrating a return to the third tier of English football after a 36-year absence, were held to a goalless draw by Hartlepool .
