Barnsley will continue attempt to lure Butcher, while Robins dismisses Doncaster link

The Inverness Caledonian Thistle boss, currently on a short holiday in England during the winter’s break north of the border, travelled to Yorkshire from his family home in Suffolk.

Barnsley, who are hoping to unveil a new boss ahead of Saturday’s Championship derby with Leeds United, made an approach to speak to Butcher on Monday.

Compensation and Butcher’s wages are not thought to be an issue regarding the 54-year-old’s possible move south although Inverness are reluctant to let him go.

So far, Barnsley have only asked permission to speak to Butcher, who is likely to want to bring trusted assistant Maurice Malpas and Steve Marsella with him if he decides to take up the challenge at Oakwell.

Coventry City boss Mark Robins – installed as the favourite to take over at Doncaster Rovers yesterday – has dismissed speculation suggesting he could take over at the Keepmoat Stadium.

On rumours of a move to Rovers, the former Barnsley and Rotherham United chief said: “I didn’t know that, but I have got a game to concentrate on.

“There’s nothing in that at all, it’s absolute speculation.”
