Barnsley: Winnall: The sky is the limit for Reds

BARNSLEY top-scorer Sam Winnall insists the sky is still the limit for the Reds this season, despite the side currently lying in 13th spot in League One.

The Reds’ season may have failed to consistently hit the heights, but in a division just separate fifth-placed Chesterfield and fifth-from-bottom Crewe, Winnall says that all is still to play for.

The former Scunthorpe United player is back in harness after a hamstring problem and his return is nicely timed, with the Reds showing signs of getting their act together at long last with Danny Wilson’s side chasing a third straight league win for the first time this campaign at Swindon on Saturday.

Winnall, who says he is ready if called upon to make his first start since late November at the County Ground this weekend, said: “We are starting to look as if we are kind of fulfilling our potential.

“If we can find some consistency and continuity in the team, then I think we can really push on.

“We are only four points off the play-offs and the sky is the limit for us really.

“It is just how much we want it.

“We should be aiming for the top six and we are in a league where a lot of teams can beat anybody on their day and the most consistent ones rise to the top.

“We have got to be aiming for four down to sixth, that’s where we all want to be as a team and squad and where we are focusing. It’s a realistic target.”

On whether he feels fit enough to reach another landmark with his first start since November 29, he added: “I feel good. It was a long process of getting fit again as I had a few setbacks while I was going through re-hab.

“But I feel I am getting closer to full fitness and I am getting no pain or anything.

“I am itching to get back involved and just want to play as many minutes as possible.

“I am ready to start if needed. I will speak with the manager and physio. But I am raring to go.”
