Barnsley’s Butterfield out for the season

Barnsley have been rocked by the news that one of their star players, Jacob Butterfield, has been ruled out for the season with injury.

The 21-year-old midfielder suffered a knee injury in the New Year’s Eve victory over Leeds United.

And MRI scans today have revealed that the homegrown talent has damaged his anterior cruciate ligament.

He will undergo knee surgery on Friday to repair the ligament.

He had scored five goals in 24 league appearances this season and had been a driving force in Barnsley’s surprise run at the play-offs.

Butterfield’s contract is up in June and he had been attracting a lot of interest, with Newcastle United among his suitors.
