Barry Bannan believes Sheffield Wednesday can spoil the party

It has been a season to forget for Wednesday, a horrendous injury list undermining their bid to improve on back-to-back play-off campaigns.

It sees the Owls heading to Molineux on Saturday, with two games remaining, sitting in 15th, 36 points adrift of Wolves, who will be presented with the Championship trophy after the game when they will have topped 100 points with a win.

The Owls have improved, however, with the return of talisman Fernando Forestieri, captain Tom Lees and Scotland midfield international Barry Bannan.

Five wins from seven outings have wiped out the threat of a relegation scrap and increased optimism for next season.

After Saturday’s trip to the Black Country, Wednesday finish their campaign at home to Norwich City.

Bannan believes watching Wolves lift the trophy will remind the Owls what they have missed out on this season.

“We are a big team, and if we could have kept everyone fit, it might have been us partying,” said Bannan, who returned last month after not playing since December due to injury.

“But it’s not, so fair play to Wolves. They have been brilliant all season and deserve it. But we will be going there confident we can turn them over.”

Bannan wants to win the last two games to send the Owls into the summer break with renewed confidence. This season the Owls have collected just 53 points compared to 81 last season when they finished fourth.

“We want to go into the off-season on a high,” said Bannan. “We don’t want to be remembered for the losing the last two games.

“We want to be going into the summer happy with our finish and looking forward to coming back, ready to have a right go next season.

“Going to Wolves is a motivation for anyone. We are going to the so-called best team in the league.

“I know for a fact that we can go there and win, with what we have in the changing room. We are good enough to go and beat them.

“They will have a party, but it won’t be a party for us, we will concentrate on getting three points.”
