Beckford’s scissor-kick ensures Yorkshire’s nine clubs prove cut above with full house

YORKSHIRE clubs are basking in the glow of a Super Saturday, which saw all nine competing sides claim Football League victories in a stunning sequence.

Huddersfield Town led the way with a fine 2-1 Championship win over high-flying visitors Wolves, while Barnsley claimed an outstanding away-day triumph at Charlton, thanks to a 64th-minute strike from Tomasz Cywka.

Last-gasp Hull City came from behind to beat Ipswich Town 2-1, and Middlesbrough triumphed 1-0 at Brighton.

Sheffield United and Doncaster Rovers saw off Preston and Brentford respectively in League One, while there were victories in League Two for Bradford City, York City and Rotherham United, whose manager Steve Evans returned to the dug-out for the 3-0 success at Aldershot.

A majestic scissor-kick from loan striker Jermaine Beckford – the 100th league goal of his career – proved the highlight for Huddersfield, who impressively claimed another big Championship scalp in front of a season’s-best crowd at the John Smith’s Stadium.

James Vaughan also netted for the Terriers in an outstanding first-half with ex-Leeds and Blackpool chief Simon Grayson claiming his side’s performance in the first 45 minutes was as good as any in his managerial career.

He said: “There has probably been no bigger and better performance from us in a long time. When you look at the intensity of the play, right from the first minute, we made it a real difficult afternoon for Wolves. We made them look ordinary in the first half. If we’d have been four- or five-nil up at half-time, nobody would have had any complaints.

“That was probably as good a half as I have had as a manager from any club I have been employed by. There were two fantastic goals and it was a great way for Jermaine to bring up that 100th goal. He is enjoying life here.”

On the future of Beckford, on loan at Town until January, Grayson said: “We will address that in January. I am sure if there is a deal to be done, (chairman) Dean (Hoyle) will back me on trying to do it. But it is a long way off yet.”

Adamant that Town are under no pressure, despite raising expectations by moving up to third in the Championship, he added: “There is no pressure on us from the chairman and I do not put any on the players. We are enjoying the ride we are on.

“Nobody expects us to do anything, and wherever we finish this year, as long as it is a place above the bottom three, that will do us.”

Meanwhile, Hull joined Huddersfield in the Championship play-off places with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Ipswich Town.

Two late goals from substitute Nick Proschwitz – his first for the club following a £2.6m move from German club SC Paderborn – were enough to seal the points and power the Tigers back up to sixth.

Manager Steve Bruce, who has been linked with a move for Stoke City’s Wilson Palacios, said: “I am thrilled for Nick that it has eventually happened for him. It hasn’t been easy.

“Sone Aluko and Jay Simpson have done very well this season so Nick has had to be patient.

“He has also moved country and he is a young lad trying to adapt to the intensity and ferocity of football in the Championship. The German second division is not like ours, it’s very different.”

Hull’s joy at claiming all three points was tempered slightly by the news that last season’s top scorer, Matty Fryatt, needs an operation on his Achilles, which could rule him out for the season.

Bruce added: “It is not looking good for Matty. He tried to train (on Saturday morning) but now it looks as though he is going to head for an operation, and that means a long time out, sadly.”
