'Birthplace of football' Sheffield has to steel itself against dismay

WORLD Cup final referee Howard Webb was among those left disappointed at Sheffield's Winter Garden when news of England's failed bid came through.

If England had hosted the World Cup in 2018, Sheffield Wednesday's Hillsborough would have been one of the grounds used, which researchers estimate would have brought about 150m of investment into the city.

Webb, who grew up in Rotherham and refereed the World Cup final in Johannesburg this summer, had made a passionate speech to the assembled crowd about the importance of the World Cup coming not only to England, but to Sheffield.

However, he and the other assembled footballing royalty of the city, including Owls manager Alan Irvine and chief executive Nick Parker, were left devastated by the FIFA decision.

Sheffield Council leader Paul Scriven said he was "gutted" and added: "The World Cup is about spirit of character, and this city has great spirit of character.

"Technically, I thought England's bid was brilliant. However, we accept the decision and will get behind Russia for a brilliant World Cup. Sheffield should feel proud."

He added: "The city will benefit from the work of the bid team, which has seen local sporting organisations work together for the benefit of the community, whilst at the same time Sheffield profiled on a national and international stage.

"We move forward with the delivery of a sporting legacy for Sheffield people to benefit from."

Sheffield's bid effort resulted in an alliance which includes representatives from both United and Wednesday as well as as the Sheffield and Hallamshire Football Association.

The city considers itself the birthplace of football and is home to Sheffield FC, founded in 1857 and officially the world's oldest football club.

Sheffield's bid director Wayne Coyle said: "Obviously we are disappointed but remain proud of our bid which not only showed vision but was unique due to the city's role in pioneering the sport all those years ago."
