Blackburn Rovers v Huddersfield Town: Norwood on double mission as Town eye survival

LIFELONG Burnley fan Oliver Norwood admits his family and friends have spent the past few weeks willing Huddersfield Town to do their bit in pushing Blackburn Rovers towards relegation.

For the midfielder, however, tonight will be all about the Terriers’ own quest for survival as the teams sitting fifth- and sixth bottom go head-to-head at Ewood Park.

“I have had a lot of good luck messages ahead of the Blackburn game,” said Norwood. “My friends and family have all been saying, ‘If Huddersfield win, it could send them down’.

“There would be nothing better for the Burnley fans than that. I am not saying I feel that personally but for the Burnley fans it would be brilliant to see them relegated.

“What I am concentrating on right now is Huddersfield. We have four games left and need to get the points to stay in the league.”

Town gave their survival hopes a major boost on Saturday with a fine 3-1 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers, who as a result slipped back into the bottom three as Mark Robins’s men moved up a couple of places to 19th.

Rovers also won, which is why the Lancashire club go into tonight’s ‘War of the Roses’ fixture one place and one point behind the Terriers.

With games to come against Millwall (18th), Bristol City (24th) and Barnsley (22nd) after tonight’s visit to Blackburn, Huddersfield’s fate is very much in their own hands.

Norwood added: “I don’t know how many points will do it –though, of course, four wins and 12 points will do. So, that is what we are aiming to get.

“There is no doubt how much staying up would mean. You saw that at Wolves. The same goes for the fans. There must have been 2,000 at Molineux and they are different class.

“They have stuck with us through thick and thin, and we want to reward that support.

“The result (at Wolves) was an important one, as there were some big results (elsewhere on Saturday). There will be ups and down, so it is four cup finals for us. Things are in our hands, which is why we only worry about ourselves.”

Town, who will face former striker Jordan Rhodes tonight, fell behind at Molineux but hit back through a stunning solo effort from Sean Scannell and Jermaine Beckford’s double.

Norwood added: “We started a bit sluggish at Wolves, which was a bit strange as we had spoken in the hotel before the game of the need to start well.

“But then they scored after three minutes and you do have a little think, ‘Is this going to be their day?’ We stuck at it, though, and ground it out for the next 15 minutes or so.

“Then, the crowd turned on their players, which added to the pressure they were feeling. We sensed a chance and went for the jugular.”

Norwood was part of an impressive midfield display by Town, something that understandably pleased a player whose form has been up and down during his first season with the Yorkshire club.

He said: “I did lose a bit of my form and I was as frustrated as anyone. But this is my first proper season in a first-team environment. I set off very well but then I had a dip in form and was struggling to get out of it.

“But I spoke to people and got some good advice. I also worked hard on the training ground and while I don’t feel to be quite back to where I was, I do feel to be getting somewhere near.

“If I keep improving towards the end of the season, then that can only help the team, and that is the important thing.”

Rovers pairing Grant Henley and Colin Kazim-Richards will both be missing tonight after each collected a 10th booking of the season in Saturday’s win over Derby County.
