Bradford City 1 Gillingham 0: Jacobs relieved at late winner

GOALS have been in short supply for Bradford City this season and it took a defender to earn them their second win in seven matches with only their fourth of the campaign.

Steve Williams was restored to the starting line-up after manager Peter Taylor decided to move defender Luke Oliver into the attack to provide some height in the continued absence through injury of James Hanson.

Not only did Williams help City keep a 'clean sheet' but he outjumped goalkeeper Lance Cronin to score a dramatic stoppage-time winner.

Assistant manager Wayne Jacobs said: "Steve showed great determination to jump above the keeper and head the ball into the net and was my man of the match."

A game of few chances seemed destined to end goalless before City were awarded a free-kick near the touchline in the second minute of stoppage time. The Gillingham defence cleared Luke O'Brien's free-kick but to Tommy Doherty on the right and he delivered a cross to the far post for Williams to score the goal that ended City's run of four matches without a win.

Another positive for Bradford was the form of former England and Aston Villa midfield player Lee Hendrie, who came on as substitute for his debut at the start of the second half.

Hendrie, who has joined on a short-term contract did enough to suggest he will be an asset. "I think Lee will be a shot in the arm for our fans and the little boost we need," said Jacobs. "He has not come to us for the wages – he has come to play football."
