Bradford City 3 Cheltenham 1: Hendrie on target for Bantams

MANAGER Peter Taylor praised his former England Under-21 protege Lee Hendrie as Bradford produced their best performance of the season to beat Cheltenham.

City were struggling to break down a stubborn Town defence when the former England and Aston Villa midfielder produced a piece of magic to put them 2-1 ahead 16 minutes from the end, scoring with a neat overhead kick to complete a smart four-man move.

Hendrie, who joined Bradford on a short-term contract five weeks ago when he failed to find a new club after Derby County released him at the end of last season, was named acting captain after defender Shane Duff's ankle injury prevented him from facing his old club and he played an influential role as City at last gave their suffering supporters something to cheer.

Taylor, who was Hendrie's England Under-21s manager, said: "I made him captain because he was the most experienced player we had available. He is exactly the same as he always was. He is a clever player around the box and he is still hungry. He is not here for a holiday – he is here to do well."

City went a goal down after seven minutes when Josh Low ran on to a through pass to beat Jon McLaughlin with a low right foot shot into the far corner, but they hit back with some of their best football of the season and equalised after 32 minutes, David Syers scoring with a diving header from Luke O'Brien's cross.

Hendrie's goal gave City the lead before James Hanson wrapped up the victory.
