Bradford City v Gillingham: Vibrant City revitalised for League One run-in

The Bantams had a hectic deadline day, with four new signings arriving before McCall’s side headed south to take on Oxford United in the Checkatrade Trophy quarter-finals.

A 2-1 defeat ended any hopes of a possible Wembley trip in the Trophy but, otherwise, the City boss believes the final day of the window was hugely positive for the club.

Charlie Wyke’s capture from Carlisle United was the big headline move, not least because the £250,000 fee was the biggest paid by Bradford since Ashley Ward’s arrival for a seven-figure fee in the days when money was apparently no object at Valley Parade during the summer of 2000.

But McCall was also able to bring in Huddersfield Town defender Jacob Hanson on a permanent deal along with Aston Villa defender Kevin Toner and Sheffield Wednesday left-back Matthew Penney on loan.

It brought a positive end to a window that had earlier seen James Hanson depart for Sheffield United for an initial £150,000 fee that could rise by a further £50,000 or so.

“We are very pleased with the work that has been done,” said McCall, ahead of today’s league fixture with Gillingham.

“We have lost a bit of experience, but we have got some young, hungry players.

“There is a good, vibrant feel about the club at the moment and we look forward to, hopefully, having a successful run-in.”

Filipe Morais was a surprise departure on deadline day after the Portuguese’s contract was cancelled by mutual consent to allow him to be reunited with Phil Parkinson at Bolton Wanderers.

“I am delighted to see the window shut,” added McCall. “When you have got good players you never know what is going to happen.”

Wyke is expected to start following his protracted move from Brunton Park.
