Bradford City v Millwall: Charlie Wyke hoping he'll be able to watch Wembley highlights

AS USUAL, Charlie Wyke's father will faithfully record tonight's Football League highlights show on Channel 5.

It is something he has done all season, though whether Ged’s son then watches a re-run of the League One final will be decided by one major factor.

“It would be nice to watch the game again because that means we will have been promoted,” said the 24-year-old, who moved to Valley Parade in a £250,000 deal from Carlisle United just minutes before the January transfer window closed.

“I don’t really watch the highlights too much. It is why I haven’t seen much of Millwall or their two strikers. They (Steve Morison and Lee Gregory) have got to be good players because they have scored a few goals.

“But I only really watch (the highlights) if Carlisle or Bradford are on. My dad tries to record the games, but I don’t let him. I tell him, ‘Only if I score’.”

Wyke heads to Wembley on the back of an unusually barren run, his last eight appearances having yielded just one goal.

The former Middlesbrough apprentice is, though, already a big fans’ favourite after netting six times in his first 10 games following that switch from Carlisle.

His prowess in the air has even brought comparisons with one of City’s favourite sons, former striker Bobby Campbell.

For his part, Wyke is relishing the push for promotion after spending most of his career fighting relegation from League Two when on loan at Hartlepool United and AFC Wimbledon.

“If you had said at the start of the season that I would be playing at Wembley, I wouldn’t have believed you with the way seasons have been going in the past,” added the striker, who remains Carlisle’s top scorer with 14 league goals despite leaving almost four months ago.

“I have had a good season and, hopefully, we can now top it off with promotion.”
