AFC Wimbledon v Bradford City: Parkinson is concentrating on ensuring Bradford remain fresh

WITH one manager-of-the-month award already in the bag along with a nomination for the February award that was won by Paolo Di Canio, Bradford City manager Phil Parkinson has plenty to be happy about right now.

A run of just three defeats in 16 games is why the Bantams’ chief has come to the notice of the panel charged with drawing up the three-man shortlist for League Two on behalf of sponsors npower.

Such an impressive record has also helped City – who in late November appeared in grave danger of slipping out of the Football League – gradually pull away from danger.

Parkinson admits to being pleased with the improvements that have been made on his watch, but is quick to stress that there is still a long way to go before Bradford can consider the threat of relegation banished for good.

He said: “Over a decent period of time, we have been getting good results so it has been a good time. The big thing from our point of view now is making sure it continues.

“But we can only do that by focusing on one game at a time. I know it is a busy month but all my energy right now is concentrating on facing Wimbledon. Anything else has to wait. With games coming thick and fast we have to make sure we get team selection right. We need the players to be fresh.”

This week brings a continuation of City’s gruelling road trip as they travel to AFC Wimbledon tonight and then Aldershot Town on Saturday. The two journeys are part of a 2,532-mile odyssey facing the Bantams in just 32 days.

Bradford manager Parkinson said: “The good thing in a month where we have so many games is that we have started well. The win against Oxford was a big one and one I felt was thoroughly deserved.

“It was a pleasing performance against a very good team, who I personally feel will finish in the play-offs. The challenge now is to maintain that in a week when we will again be doing a lot of travelling.”

Last six games: AFC Wimbledon DDDLLW, Bradford City DWLLDW.

Referee: D Deadman (Cambridgeshire).
