Amado’s arrival moves Jones to halfway point of rebuilding job

Sheffield Wednesday have signed former Portugal Under-21 midflelder Diogo Amado as Dave Jones continues his summer recruitment drive Hillsborough.

The 22-year-old – who played with current Owls midfielder Jose Semedo at Sporting Lisbon – is the sixth new signing at Hillsborough, with a target of a dozen new players before the Championship kick-off with Derby County on August 18.

“I am incredibly excited about this move. I know Sheffield Wednesday from Portugal and it is a big, big club,” said the midfielder.

“I played with Jose Semedo at Sporting Lisbon and he is a great guy and he will help me settle into Sheffield. I am really looking forward to this.”

Amado, who has represented Portugal at every level from the Under-16s through to the Under-21s, follows the arrival of left-back Joe Mattock, centre-half Anthony Gardner, right-back Kieran Lee, striker Chris Maguire and goalkeeper Chris Kirkland.

The summer rebuilding job is also in full swing at Valley Parade as Phil Parkinson has already brought in seven new faces to Bradford City. The Bantams reported for pre-season training this week and Parkinson knows City need to strengthen further the playing squad as they prepare for the League Two season.

He said: “We still have work to do and that will continue every day. We are still in the process of building up the squad, and that hasn’t finished by any means yet.

“If you look at the nucleus of our squad at present, however, it is looking pretty decent. It’s my job to make sure we keep building on the position we find ourselves in now, and we will do.

“We have a good group of 16 or so players but we are still looking around. Knowing how tough our division can be, we still need to target some more strong players.”

Rotherham United have brought forward the kick-off of Saturday’s pre-season friendly with Parkgate to noon as they fly to the Algarve that evening for warm weather training.
