Bradford goalkeeper Jason Pickford managed to keep out Sanchez Watt’s free-kick and a George Moncur volley in the opeing 45 minutes.
At the other end, United goalkeeper Sam Walker thwarted Mark Yeates while Stephen Darby denied Freddie Sears on the line before the Colchester striker was foiled by Pickford.
