FA Cup: Five alive for giantkillers Bradford City

The draw for the quarter-finals takes place tonight at 7.30pm on BBC One.

Two of their possible opponents - Arsenal and Aston Villa - Bradford beat en route to the Capital One Cup final two years ago, in a run just as improbable as the one they are currenty on.

Here’s how the West Yorkshire club have fared last time out against the other 2015 FA Cup quarter-finalists.

Arsenal - Won 3-2 on penalties, December 2012

Arsenal will still shudder at the thought of the Bantams. They were a shoo-in to win the 2013 Capital One Cup but fell at Valley Parade in the quarters. They avoided a 90-minute defeat with a late Thomas Vermaelen goal, but were undone in the shoot-outs when the Belgian thumped the post.

Aston Villa - Won 4-3 on aggregate, January 2013

After seeing off Arsenal the Bantams faced Villa in the semi-finals and won the first leg 3-1 at Valley Parade. They defended a two-goal lead at Villa Park and it looked under threat when Christian Benteke scored, but James Hansen’s second-half goal got City on their way to Wembley.

Blackburn - Lost 1-0, April 1990

City were beaten by a solitary goal - one of 23 defeats in a miserable season in the old second division. They were relegated with just 41 points.

Liverpool - Lost 2-0, May 2001

A Bradford side heading out of the Premier League was defeated by goals from Michael Owen and Gary McAllister. Benito Carbone started up front for City in a side which contained the likes of Robbie Blake and Stuart McCall.

Manchester United - Lost 3-0, January 2001

City were fighting for their lives at the foot of the Premier League and held United for 72 minutes, until goalkeeper Gary Walsh made a horrible hash of a clearance and gave Teddy Sheringham an open-goal tap-in which opened the floodgates.

Preston - Won 2-1, November 2014

Bradford can travel a shorter distance back in time to their last meeting with League One rivals Preston. Rory McArdle put them ahead and, despite Joe Garner levelling with five minutes to go Mark Yeates won it 60 seconds later.

Reading - Won 2-1, April 2004

Nearly 11 years have passed since these sides met in a game which ended with both sides down to 10 men. David Wetherall put Bradford in front, Dave Kitson equalised and Lewis Emanuel scored the winner. Michael Branch saw red for a City side featuring the likes of Nicky Summerbee and Danny Cadamarteri.

West Brom - Lost 4-1, September 2005

Nathan Ellington (two), Dimoansy Kamara and Rob Earnshaw all scored as West Brom wiped the floor with Bradford in the League Cup, Steven Schumacher scoring City’s solitary goal. Dean Windass started up front, with Bobby Petta in midfield.
