Leeds land Saints draw as Bradford face trip to Wigan

The Whites, who knocked out Everton in the shock of the third round on Tuesday evening, entertain Nigel Adkins’s Saints at Elland Road, with City, the lowest-ranked side left in the competition, heading across the Pennines to the JJB Stadium.

Neil Warnock’s side are seeking to get past the fourth-round stage of the competition for the first time since finishing runners-up in the League Cup in 1996, with the tie seeing ex-Whites defender Frazer Richardson return to West Yorkshire with Saints, who knocked out Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 on Tuesday night.

Both Saints and Leeds famously met in the semi-finals of the League Cup in 1978-79, with United surrendering a 2-0 lead in the first leg of the semi-final at Elland Road, which ended 2-2, with the Hampshire side winning the second leg 1-0 at the Dell to triumph 3-2 on aggregate, before losing to Nottingham Forest in the final.

City will be sure to not be lacking in the support stakes, at least, for the trip to Wigan and if the visitors do secure an upset, it will book them a place in the last eight for the first time since 1988-89, when they bowed out to Bristol City.

The highlight of the draw sees big guns Chelsea and Manchester United square off at Stamford Bridge, with the duo having lifted the cup four times between them in the past seven seasons.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers faces a nostalgic Anfield reunion with the side he left in the summer in Swansea, after the Welshmen were paired with the holders.

A north-east derby sees Middlesbrough visit Sunderland, whose ranks include ex-Boro favourites Adam Johnson and Lee Cattermole.

The tie also sees Boro’s midfielder Grant Leadbitter and Julio Arca return to their former club.

Norwich, managed by former White Hart Lane coach and long-serving right-back Chris Hughton, host Tottenham Hotspur, while Arsenal visit Reading. Swindon host Aston Villa.
