Leeds United v Bradford City: Bradford set to cash in on Cleverley

BRADFORD CITY joint chairman Mark Lawn last night revealed that tonight’s Carling Cup derby with Leeds United could provide the first of two financial boosts for the club in a matter of weeks.

The Bantams expect to bank more than £100,000 from the trip to Elland Road, money that has already allowed manager Peter Jackson to make additional signings this summer.

And in more welcome news for City fans, the transfer of Tom Cleverley, who was yesterday called into the senior England squad by Fabio Capello, to Manchester United as a youngster is likely to soon start paying dividends.

Lawn exclusively told the Yorkshire Post: “The Cup draw was a dream one for not only our supporters but also the club itself, especially as it is being shown live on Sky.

“With the fee for live broadcast plus the gate receipts, we expect to make in excess of £100,000. That is the equivalent to signing two or three new players.”

City’s six-figure cash windfall from tonight is likely to be followed within the next month or so by an additional payment from Premier League champions United for Cleverley.

On Bradford’s books as a boy, he moved to Old Trafford in a deal that included provisions for the Yorkshire club to benefit from the midfielder’s possible development in the game.

These included a payment if Cleverley made 10 first-team appearances for United plus a substantial sell-on clause if he is ever sold by the Red Devils.

With the 21-year-old, who impressed hugely on loan at Wigan Athletic last season, likely to be a firm part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s plans this term after featuring in Sunday’s Community Shield win over Manchester City, it seems only a matter of time before Bradford start to benefit.

Lawn added: “It is not a huge amount (for playing 10 games) but all additional income is welcome.

“Unfortunately, the Community Shield didn’t count as it is classed as a friendly but he seems to be in the first-team plans at Old Trafford.”

Lawn did, however, confirm that there is no clause to cover the midfielder playing for England following Cleverley’s call-up for the friendly against Holland tomorrow.

In tonight’s West Yorkshire derby, meanwhile, City are likely to hand a debut to Oscar Jansson following the Spurs goalkeeper’s arrival on loan.

Jackson, whose side are expected to be backed by a travelling army of more than 4,000 fans tonight, said: “Everyone is really looking forward to the game.

“I played in a few Bradford-Leeds derbies and they can get quite fiery at times. What we want to do is go there and keep it tight early on.

“Elland Road can be really rocking when Leeds are in front but, equally, the crowd can get on to the home team if things are not going so well. We have to try and exploit that.

“The pressure is on Leeds as they will be expected to win.”

The tie pits two managers against each other who have a shared history with Jackson once having worked for the agency that still looks after Grayson’s career.

It means the pair will have plenty to reminisce about ahead of kick-off, with Leeds manager Grayson revealing that his Bradford counterpart may not have always offered the best advice.

The United chief joked: “In between his two spells at Huddersfield, Jacko worked for the agency that I have been with for a lot of years so he used to look after me when I was a player.

“He scuppered a few deals by asking for too much money so it will be nice to get him back by beating Bradford.”

Grayson, who will be without Robert Snodgrass, Darren O’Dea and Max Gradel tonight due to international commitments, added: “Seriously, I am really pleased to see him back involved in football after a tough time when he had cancer.

“He was actually over at Thorp Arch (last week) watching our behind closed doors friendly against Leicester and we had a chat.

“Mind, I did spot him trying to spy on us training a bit later so I made sure we didn’t do too much.

“We had a bit of a chat about the Carling Cup tie and agreed it is a good draw as there will be a decent crowd.

“Mind, I have already told him that he will be the second-best looking manager at the Carling Cup tie – to which he replied that he was going to wear his £2,000 suit.”
