Shrewsbury stormed into a 3-0 lead over Derby at Pride Park through James Collins and a Marvin Morgan double, then withstood a second-half fightback to win 3-2, while Danny Carlton and Kevin Ellison gave Morecambe a 2-0 win at Barnsley.

Newly-promoted League One side Bury joined in the upsets as they coasted to a 3-1 win over Coventry at Gigg Lane. Andy Bishop cancelled out Roy O’Donovan’s early strike before Ryan Lowe hit a match-winning double late on.

Simon Grayson’s Leeds narrowly avoided embarrassment in their West Yorkshire derby with Bradford at Elland Road, twice falling behind before Ramon Nunez’s second goal of the night in the 75th minute edged them a 3-2 win.

Jeffery Schlupp scored a hat-trick as Leicester eased to a 4-1 win at Rotherham while Southampton beat Torquay by the same score. An Ashley Barnes penalty saw Brighton home against Gillingham.

Other Championship winners in normal time were Millwall, who won 1-0 at Plymouth, Doncaster, who beat Tranmere 3-0, and Middlesbrough, who coasted to a 3-0 win at Walsall with a hat-trick from Marvin Emnes.

League Two Hereford caused a minor upset as Yoann Arquin scored in injury time to overcome League One Brentford at Edgar Street.

Bournemouth were the biggest winners of the night as they thrashed Dagenham and Redbridge 5-0 while MK Dons and Huddersfield each scored four away from home to beat Cheltenham and Port Vale respectively.

Scunthorpe eased to a 2-0 win at Accrington Stanley, Exeter beat Yeovil by the same scoreline and late goals from Neil Mellor and Iain Hume helped Preston scrape a 3-2 home win over Crewe.
