Night of shocks as Leeds and Bradford sink Premier clubs

BRADFORD City boss Phil Parkinson declared himself “ecstatic” with his team’s efforts after th League Two outfit pulled off a giant-killing at Wigan Athletic to secure a place in the Capital One Cup quarter-finals.

Having soaked up plenty of pressure from their Barclays Premier League hosts over the course of a contest that finished 0-0 after extra-time, the Bantams triumphed 4-2 on penalties - with Latics midfielders Shaun Maloney and Jordi Gomez both failing to convert their spot-kicks. Nathan Doyle, Gary Jones, Stephen Darby and Alan Connell all coolly netted penalties for the visitors.

Asked how he felt about the victory, Parkinson said: “I am ecstatic.

“I thought it was a night of great discipline by the team. There were a lot of big hearts out there.

“Wigan give you problems that are ones we don’t normally come up against in League Two, in terms of the movement of the team and their shape.”

In another surprise result, Leeds United eased to a comofrtable 3-0 victory over Premier League strugglers at Elland Road.

Goals from Michael Tonge and El-Hadji Diouf, as well as Luciano Becchio’s penalty, saw the home side through.
