Parkinson marks his City arrival with first addition

NEW Bradford City manager Phil Parkinson wasted little time in making an impact yesterday after snapping up winger Kyel Reid.

Within hours of being unveiled as Peter Jackson’s successor, the former Hull City manager signed Reid on a two-year deal and is chasing several other targets, including Charlton striker Paul Benson, before the transfer window closes tomorrow.

With the Bantams languishing in the bottom half of League Two, Parkinson – who has studied match DVDs from this season and also attended City’s Carling Cup defeat to Leeds United – has already identified key areas to strengthen if the Valley Parade club are to climb the table.

The 43-year-old has signed a two-year contract with the Bantams and will watch his new charges tonight when Sheffield Wednesday are the visitors in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

Bradford’s poor start to the season had seen them score just two goals in four league matches before Saturday when, under caretaker manager Colin Cooper, they secured a 4-2 win over Barnet, the club’s first victory of the season.

“It’s been a busy 48 hours,” said Parkinson, who has been scouting for Premier League side Arsenal since leaving Charlton Athletic in January. “I am really pleased to have sorted it out. It’s a great opportunity the board have given me and I am looking forward to repaying that faith.

“I have seen a couple of DVDs over the weekend, and I had already seen the Leeds game. It was a good win on Saturday, but there is work to be done.

“We have got some work to do to improve this team and hopefully make it one that can challenge.”

Former Sheffield United left winger Reid left Charlton Athletic in the summer and was available on a free transfer.

“We have signed Kyel Reid and that’s a good start for us,” said Parkinson. “He is a wide player who I have worked with before, an attacking threat.

“Time is against us for new additions with the deadline on Wednesday, but we are going to work hard and try and get those players in. If not, the loan window opens seven days later.

“Benson is someone I have worked with before, a good goalscorer at this level and above, but it won’t be easy to get him.

“He is one of several players we have made enquiries on. If we can do it, great, if not we will move on.”
